Kerajinan Batik Lawasan (literally translated as Old Batik Craft) is a handmade piece of art made from woven old Batik fabric.
The craft is mostly re-cycling old hand-painted or printed Batik which pattern has been washed out thus creating an antique nuance on the motif. The crafter procures used batik fabric from the traditional market, tailor, batik workshop or individuals who still wear batik as daily clothing.
In the process, the fabric is classified according to the color, motifs and the character (i.e.; tribal to coastal motif) and cut manually into pieces. The pieces are glued to the paper following a specific pattern or its original pattern if the fabric has a distinguished interesting pattern. The piece is shredded into a long thin strand called ‘pakan’ which will be woven using ‘lusi’ thread in a non-electrical weaving device called ‘hani’.
Lusi thread is arranged on the weaving device according to the plait construction.
The woven piece is lined with fabric and used as wall hanging, placemat and unique window blind.
